Reinstall OS, UbuntuOne kills local backup?

Asked by Matt Edwards

I've used UbuntuOne for several months, symlinked to a directory named /data/UbuntuOne. All was good, each time I would edit a file in this location, the UbuntuOne client icon in the systray would indicate a successful sync, and I could browse the files out in the UbuntuOne cloud. No problems. Then I needed to reinstall Ubuntu (ran into X configuration problems related to the new open source nvidia drivers and couldn't get back into X).

The reinstall went well, I preserved all data under /data, reformatting / during the install. Upon completion, I was able to verify all data under /data was intact. I installed the UbuntuOne client software and relinked my "~/Ubuntu One" directory to /data/UbuntuOne. Now looking at my local /data/UbuntuOne directory, almost all of the documents I had saved there are now gone. The top level directories are still there, and one subdirectory containing several dozen images is there, but the documents, gone.

Looking at the UbuntuOne cloud, myfiles appear to be missing from there as well. When I look at the computers that are "linked" to my U1 account, 4 computers appear, all of which refer to the same local computer (all are named "4400p", but all have different guids). Is there some chance my data is still out in the cloud, just under a different guid, or is it lost forever? Does the UbuntuOne client have permission to _delete_ files from your local directories? What is going on here?

Hi Matt,

The only time Ubuntu One should delete files is if there is an action from a client (web or desktop) that triggers the delete. If you deleted files from your desktop that were in the ~/Ubuntu One folder then those files would be deleted on the servers. It doesn't sound like you did that. We'll need you to file a new bug and provide the following log files so we can try to figure out what may be going on:

 1. File a new bug at https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntuone-client/+filebug
 2. Attach the following files:
     ~/.cache/ubuntuone/log/syncdaemon-exception.log
     ~/.cache/ubuntuone/log/syncdaemon.log

For more real time support you can hop on #ubuntuone on Freenode IRC. Ask for joshuahoover or rye and refer to this question. I'm (joshuahoover) normally on Monday-Friday, 13:00-21:00 UTC.

Thank you,

Joshua

I have already attached those files to the bug report. Thanks for your
reply. One thing that did happen now that you mention it, when I first set
up UbuntuOne, it created its own empty Ubuntu One directory. So for some
period of time, the account was linked to an empty directory. I realized
this about an hour later, killed the daemon, deleted the local directory and
remapped the symlink to the /data/UbuntuOne directory. Then restarted the u1
daemon.
