cannot log in after install of ubuntu 8.10

Asked by matthew

I did a full instaLL of ubuntu 8.10 successfully and after reboot it askes for my user name and password but tells me that my username and or password is incorrect. Ive looked and followed numerous threads on here of the same problem that others have had but have had no success. I wrote down my username and password after i put it in the fields when i installed the ubuntu so i know its correct. What do I do can i just do a fresh install of ubuntu and if so how do i do this. Im no computer tech obviously so some detailed and simple (if possible) steps would be appreciated.
Thanx

Hi mathew,
when you log-in at the GDM screen, if you look in the lower-right corner there is a name, that is the main user name that you would have set up. type it exactly, up to but not including the hyphen.
as for the password, have you checked the caps lock key? sounds silly i know, but that might be it.
if that doesn't work then try
http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/resetpassword

i hope this helps

If you forgot you password for your ubuntu system you can recover using the following steps:
Turn your computer on.
Press ESC at the grub prompt.
Press e for edit.
Highlight the line that begins kernel ………, press e
Go to the very end of the line, add rw init=/bin/bash press enter, then press b to boot your system.
Your system will boot up to a passwordless root shell.
Type in passwd username (replacing username with matthew for example)
Set your password.
Type into the console "reboot"

Regards,
Chris.
