glipper has disappeared in 8.04

Asked by Dick Rounds

I can't find Glipper anywhere in 8.04 nor does it let me change my screen resolution to 1280 x 24.

I also can't find Wine.

I could do both of those things with 7.10.

Any solutions?

Dick

Hello Dick

Do you have extra repositories (universe and multiverse) enabled?

If not..

Open - System/Administration/Software Sources
Then enable the four software repos on the first page,

and then to install glipper

sudo apt-get install glipper

and wine:

sudo apt-get install wine

Hope it helps

Dick,

You are correct. I could not find Glipper because it was hiding. If you open Main Menu from System->Preferences, it is located at Applications->Other->Screens and Graphics. Just click the check box next to it, and it will appear in the menus.

Next is Wine. Are you able to connect to the update servers at all? Mine could not connect to the normal US servers. I changed it to another North American server (http://www.gtlib.gatech.edu/pub/ubuntu) and I could then install everything as normal.

You can change what server you use by opening System->Administration->Software Sources. In the tab Ubuntu Software, there is a drop list next to "Download From:". Click "Other..." in the list to choose the server you like. Then try to install Wine.

Also, I can assume Ubuntu could not detect the correct screen resolution. It may be because you need proprietary drivers. Make sure to install them if needed from System->Administration->Hardware Drivers.

I hope it works because it has for me ;P

I'm sorry Glipper is the clipboard program. I was talking about how to change your resolution.

Dick,

Glipper is now an applet. You can right click TopPanel - Add To Panel - Clipboard Manager

No installation of glipper is neccesary =)

Thanks, Bhavani:

I solved the problems by installing Suse instead of Ubuntu. Suse had no
problem recognizing the correct screen resolution for my monitor and
automatically installs Klipper which is the same as Glipper in Ubuntu.

I will readily admit that I am not skilled in using the terminal commands
and avoid them if at all possible. I have printed out your instructions,
however, and will give it a try for Wine.

Thanks again.

Dick
