hello
To have the 3D Desktop enabled (like the Cube)in ubuntu gutsy you should have compizconfig-settings-manager

To do that:

From Desktop, go to Applications->Add/Remove..., search for 'compiz' and then install the CompizConfig utilities.

If you are fond of commands,
Then type

sudo apt-get install compizconfig-settings-manager

in a terminal, then
To customize Compiz effects, just go to System->Preference, and select Advanced Desktop Effects Settings.

From here, you can add and remove compiz effects according to your needs..

Note: to have compizconfig utilities you need to have extra repositories enabled..
To enable all the software repositories do
Go to system --> Preferences --> Software sources
Under the Ubuntu software sources check all the available boxes (Note: just in case if you want 3rd party softwares check everything)
Now all the software repositories enabled, in ubuntu 7.10..
and execute sudo apt-get update command in a terminal (applications -> accessories -> terminal)
that should load all the repositories..

For more info on enabling the repositories ref:

Hope it helps,

Bhavani Shankar.

hello...
You should increase the number of workspaces in your desktop..Right click on the square boxes next to the trash icon and click on preferences then this opens up the workspace switcher preferences. Then adjust the number of Columns to get a figure of your desired shape.. (i.e 3 for triangle,4 for a square/cube 5 for a pentagon and so on..)
Then rotate the cube using the short cut keys and make a window appear to one or both sides of the cube and enjoy with cool effects

Hello again
To get the water effect go to effect -> water effects and check it... to initiate it click on it and go to the actions tab, under general option you can set keys for initiating, toggle rain effect, toggle wiper effect and so on.. Once the keys are set you can press those keys to use water effect(to set a key click on the default key option next to the parameter for ex in my system the default for initialisation is the delete key; a field called new accelerator comes up.. Where you can set new keys.. For ex: if you want to set shift+F9 as your key for a parameter, then press shift and F9 keys simultaneously on your keyboard)
and secondly
below are the most used short cuts:
SUPER+SHIFT+DRAG LEFT MOUSE = draw fire
SUPER+SHIFT+C = clear fire
CTRL+ALT+DRAG LEFT MOUSE = rotate cube
CTRL+ALT+LEFT ARROW = rotate cube
CTRL+ALT+DOWN ARROW = flat desktop
SHIFT+ALT+UP=initiate window picker
CTRL+ALT+DOWN=unfold cube
ALT+TAB=window switch
SUPER+TAB=flip switcher or ring switcher depending on which is enabled.
ALT+F7=initiate 'move windows'
SHIFT+F9=water effect
SHIFT+F10=slow animations
CTRL+ALT+D=show desktop

For Grouping and Tabbing:
SUPER+S=Select Single Window
SUPER+T=Tab Group
SUPER+Left=Change Left Tab
SUPER+Right=Change Right Tab
SUPER+G=Group Windows
SUPER+U=Ungroup Windows
SUPER+R=Remove Group Window
SUPER+C=Close Group
SUPER+X=Ignore Group
hold the super button then select the windows you want to group and then hit super+g

also You can add new shortcuts.. all that you have to do is just you can select one of the plugin(double click on it) and in actions tab of the plugin, under bindings you can change the shortcuts. You can even add a screen edge as a binding so that when you move your mouse cursor to screen edge(say top left) compiz will execute the particular action. It goes really nice with expo plugin. have a great time with compiz fusion!

Enjoy!

Bhavani Shankar.
