checkbox integration with docs team

Asked by Marc Kaplan

To Whom It May Concern:

My name is Marc Kaplan and I am writing to you on behalf of the Ubuntu Documentation/Wiki Team.

Back in October, we had a fairly large discussion about the current Hardware section within the Help Wiki, how out of date it is, and how much of a monsterous task it is to attempt to bring up-to-date/clean-up:

https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-doc/2008-September/011587.html

https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-doc/2008-October/011802.html

As we have not received an update, or any further communication with this project, we are wondering if there is any plan to integrate the information gathered into an active database (ex: hardware.ubuntu.com). In addition, is anyone that I would be able to liaison with between your project and the Documentation Team so that as information gets included within the database, it can be removed/redirected properly from the wiki.

This will help us clean up and streamline our documentation and make it easier for new users to find information quicker.

Best Regards,

Marc Kaplan

There is currently no plan that I am aware of to integrate hardware information other than the hardware database (hwdb) in Launchpad. This project has been around for a long time but it currently only exposes a programmatic API, which is not very convenient for users to find information quickly. Instead, I would like to propose mining the information from the hwdb in Launchpad and exposing it automatically in wiki format on a periodic basis. In order to move this proposal along, I have added this idea to a blueprint which will be discussed during the upcoming UDS:

https://blueprints.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+spec/kernel-karmic-hwdb-workshop

Please let me know what you might think of this idea and feel free to change my proposal in the whiteboard of the above blueprint.

Before I bring that whiteboard entry to the Docs Team, would it be
possible to, instead of using a cron to update the Wiki data, to just
have a cron import the data into a web-based interface with a database
back-end instead? This would be more easily searchable/accessible for
end-users and more in line with what we discussed in our mailing list.
Then we can work with the Wiki Team to remove these legacy and
outdated articles from the wiki. I do not appear to have access to
add this to the white board.

Thank you in advance and we greatly appreciate your assistance in this endeavor.
