instead of the liveCD, try the ubuntu alternate CD instead:

Better still try using the Ubuntu Cd to install Ubuntu properly and not inside Windows.

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BootFromCD

Installing Ubuntu inside Windows puts it at the mercy of any slight flaw in the Windows system - effectively if either Windows or Ubuntu has a problem then Ubuntu will not work properly. Installing within Windows results in a very weak system that combines the weaknesses of both Operating Systems. Setting up a proper dual-boot system combines the strengths of both and makes a very robust and flexible system.

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WindowsDualBoot

It is also much easier to uninstall if you decide you don't like it, as it doesn't rely on Windows uninstallers. It looks like a little more work initially but actually is much easier than it looks and is well worth it. I still retain my dual-boot even though i have only gone into Windows once in 2 months now - completely the reverse of how i used to use the dual-boot

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

Also i'm guessing that you're using the 64bit version, just as i did at the start but i soon found that the 32bit version was much better and did all the multi-threading that i thought i would only find in 64bit versions. I've also found that i don't need half the Ram i have with Ubuntu and i have less than you. Ubuntu is much more effecient and uses Ram much more wisely. My 64bit machine definitely works much faster & better with 32bit version than my 32bit machine did so i definitely am glad i upgraded

Anyway
Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

The problem appears to be according to the advanced ubuntu cd that it can't find drivers for the disc drive. Although windows XP can. The disc is
SATA. The disc is a Packard Bell (Methinks it's made by Seagate.)

Thanks for your email.
I've tried so many times to install Ubunto on this computer it just doesn't want to know. When I view the splash it reports unable to read
hard disk. I have decided to forget the whole idea and just keep Ubunto on my laptop, which works very well.

Thanks Tom for your trouble.

I've decided to forget installing Ubuntu on this computer. I'm disappointed considering it works so well on my laptop, and another PC. I've been given various possible solutions, none of which work. It just doesn't like this computer. You win some you lose some.

Hmmm, tricky.  Now i'm wondering if you're using a "raided drive" in which case please look through documentation for "Fake Raid", sorry i don't have the link easily to hand right now.

There have been a couple of cases lately where we have forgotten to check the obvious.  Please don't be offended by this answer but please make sure you have at least 8Gb free but 20Gb would be much better.  Also make sure you have used "Disk Cleanup", emptied Xp's wastebin and defragged the Xp "drive" (partition).  Lol, sorry about saying that but sometimes it is these obvious things that we overlook!

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

If you are still having trouble with this then please post it as a new question. Only the most recent questions tend to get looked at so posting/re-posting a question just before america arrives online after work/school gives the best chance of getting a good few answers - such is the nature of the internet.

If the problem has been resolved then please follow the link to the forum thread and mark it as Solved but please give us a clue how you did manage to solve it and also use the button under where you type stuff in rather than giving me karma credit points for just sending this note to you.

Apologies, good luck and many regards from
Tom :)
