Purpose of "Notes" tab

Asked by mark bowman

I see a notes tab when I am connected to the Ubuntu One cloud. I added a note assuming it would also show up in my connected ubuntu one folder on my computer. It did not. I looked for a description of how to use the notes tab, but didn't find anything. Some help along the lines of how to use it would be helpful.

Thanks.

The notes tab shows the notes you have stored on the cloud server, and that can be synchronized with Tomboy (starting with Tomboy 1.0.0-0ubuntu2). You need that version (or later) of Tomboy, and just going to 'Preferences->Synchronization' and selecting there 'Tomboy web' as the service, and then just pressing the 'Connect to server' button will get you through the process of authenticating Tomboy and starting synchronizing.

I followed the information below, found Tomboy web and pressed 'connect
to server'. It gave me a 'server not responding. Try again later'
error. I did a copy paste of the provided link
https://one.ubuntu.com/notes/ into firefox and it went right to the
link. So the address works, but not from the 'connect...' button.

I checked the 'Tomboy About' window in Tomboy. It showed '1.0.0' as a
version number. I did a system update of Ubuntu 9.10 karmic beta,
including clicking 'check' in the update manager to obtain the most
current information. I may not have the most up-to-date copy. Further
checking: The Synaptic Package Manager showed that I had 1.0.0-0
Ubuntu1. I tried checking the pre-release and unsupported checkmarks in
the Settings window of the Update Manager but it still didn't pick up
the latest version. I can wait.

But thanks for getting back to me.

Right, you need the latest package, which you can find at our beta PPA -> https://edge.launchpad.net/~ubuntuone/+archive/beta

it should hit karmic archives very soon, but install it from there if you want for the time being

Thanks.

I was able to get it this evening Japan time. I went through the
process of setting it up and it seemed to work until it came to actually
trying to do the sync in Tomboy. The initial process seemed to work
well and I received confirmation in big letters. I saved the
information as requested.

I then tried to do the sync. but received the message box saying "Failed
to Synchronize." Could not synchronize notes. Check the details below
and try again. When I checked the details it was empty.

I tried entering a note on one.ubuntu which didn't sync with my computer
and tried entering a note on my computer which didn't sync it with
one.ubuntu notes.

I feel like I am getting closer.

Thanks.

Ok, sorry, we are indeed waiting for a fix to be deployed on the server, so you're probably getting the same error message as in https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/444148, right? (you can run 'tomboy --debug' on a terminal to see the output). If so, please just be patient, the fix should land in the server pretty soon

The note sync works well (for me) but when trying to set note synchronisation it was so not obvious at all that "Tomboy Web" related in any way, shape or form to "Ubuntu One".

It may seem like a small thing but either the Ubuntu One "Notes" tab/section or "Tomboy Web" needs renaming so that it's obvious that it's the option you are looking for when trying to set up note synchronisation. :)
