How do I report bugs?

Asked by tdn

How do I report bugs, when I do not know the package name?

In the past, I could just go to bugs.launchpad.net and report a bug. It seems that this feature has been disabled. Now I have to use the ubuntu-bug tool. But this is very difficult for non-technical users. Or just everyone who does not know which package the bug relates to.

For instance, I would like to report the following bugs:
 * On Lenovo S10 netbook, suspend does not work. (will not wake up)
 * On Lenovo S10 netbook, wake up from hibernate does not work.
 * On the LiveCD installer for Ubuntu Desktop there is no option to install with encrypted root file system.
 * On the LiveCD installer for Kubuntu Desktop there is no option to install with encrypted root file system.
 * On the LiveCD installer for Ubuntu Netbook Remix (UNR) there is no option to install with encrypted root file system.
 * When using unetbootin to create a bootable USB stick with Ubuntu Desktop Alternate installer ISO, the created installer does not work: it fails to detect "CDROM" correctly. This could be a driver problem, I don't know.
 * On Lenovo S10 netbook, the built-in microphone does not work.
 * Plus I have several UI bugs in Kubuntu 9.10 and in UNR 9.10.

I hope you can help me on how to report these problems.

I will look into that for debugging. However, I still think it needs to be reported as a bug.

This is correct. Unfortuneately, there is no alternate installer for Ubuntu Netbook Remix.
Are there no plans to support whole disk encryption on the live cd? If so, I think it is sad that so many people will miss out on this great security feature.
Also, I think it is quite a big problem that it is practically impossible to install UNR with whole disk encryption on a netbook. Netbooks are very small and portable. Thus, they are more vulnerable to theft. (Much easier to steal a little lightweight object than a bigger heavier one. Also a netbook will probably be taken to places where you wouldn't bring your laptop). Whole disk encryption becomse *very* useful if the computer is stolen. Normally, you don't want some unknown criminal to have a copy of all your private data.

There is a brainstorm idea on this feature already: http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/22860/
I hope you will vote for it.

I am aware of these pages. I have tried doing just what they suggest. It does not help.
When installing my UNR on my netbook, I had to jump through uncountable hoops, because the alternate iso on a USB stick will not detect the CDROM. (There *is* no CDROM!).
It will, however, boot the installer from the USB. It goes fine until it reaches the point where it needs to find packages on the CDROM.

Thanks for the resources. I will try to trouble shoot this further. However, it does not work out of the box, thus it is a bug and should be reported and eventually addressed.

UI bugs almost always require a screenshot. Where do I attach this?

Example option found: to install 8.04 (Hardy) LTS and upgrade later this year to 10.04.

Yes. For bug reports. But I was thinking about for questions.
I would like to report these UI bugs. However, doing so require me to attach files. And it seems that the new bug report procedure requires me to use the ubuntu-bug program. Before, I could just report bugs via Launchpad website.
And it was easy to attach screenshots. It was also easy to report bugs, where you did not know the exact package name.

There are not feasable alternatives to whole disk encryption. Private information can still be read in /var/log and swap.

Truecrypt does not seem to be supported by Ubuntu.

Ok.
I will try this next time I have the time to reinstall the machine.

Where should I do this?
Where should I press F6 and then Esc?
Please note that I create a bootable USB key with unetbootin. This makes different startup menu than the one on the CDROM (for some reason).

When I boot the USB and start the installer. After selecting language and keyboard layout, I get the error:
[!!] Detect and mount CD-rom
You may need to load additional CDROM drivers from removable media, such as a driver floppy. If you have such media available now, insert it, and continue. Otherwise, you will be given the option to manually select CDROM modules.

Load CDROM drivers from removable media

If you consider it as bug, you may report a bug.
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/HelpingWithBugs

To attach screenshots in lp section "answers" you need to upload it to your favourite webpage and add the link to your question.

> create a bootable USB key with unetbootin

AlternateCD doesn't work with unetbootin, but by using usb-creator, which can be found in
system administration menu.
https://launchpad.net/usb-creator
https://help.ubuntu.com/9.10/installation-guide/index.html
e.g.
https://help.ubuntu.com/9.10/installation-guide/i386/boot-usb-files.html

Refer to wiki pages.
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/FromUSBStick
http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/

You need to tell unetbootin either which distribution to download or which local image file to use.
