Old version (12.04), forgot password; reset in root(x3), still wont let me in

Asked by VikiGnose

Decided to use old Everex with Ubuntu 12.04. Have forgotten password so found the answer on this site, dropping into root, and reset. Still wouldn't let me in. Tried to reset it again (3x's) and now can't even get the password prompt.

Ultimate goal: install whatever is the newest version of Ubuntu.

Grab the ISO for Xenial. It will be released in April this year and is LTS. It will give you support until April 2021.

Just wipe the old install off and do a clean install using the CD or USB you create. You can restore your user data from your backups.

Can you help with this problem?
