Cannot update Ubuntu; says 'failed to download repository information. Check your internet connection.'

Asked by Scott H Ganyard

When running the Update Manager, I keep getting this message: 'Failed to download repository information. Check your internet connection.'

My internet connection is just fine. I'm running Ubuntu 12.04 LTS.

You should switch the download server. Step 1 of https://help.ubuntu.com/community/PackageManagerTroubleshootingProcedure explains how. If that does not help, continue with the other steps.

Are you using a proxy? If yes this needs to be set up separately. Provide us with the details and we can tell you how to configure it.

If not follow the procedure given by Thomas :
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/PackageManagerTroubleshootingProcedure

Except at step 6 do not use the link given use this one instead.
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/yelp/+question/233757

The link in the procedure would create a new question and we don't want that we want the results in this question

What is the output of:

sudo apt-get update

I bet you added a PPA which no longer supports the installed release.....

Let's wait and see

Can you help with this problem?
