Firestarter won't start on Gutsy Gibbon

Doesn't look like it.. But making FS not require a password doesn't sound like best practice to me..

Firestarter should be available to download via Synaptic so long as you have the Universe repository enabled. You should also be able to remove the version you downloaded via Synaptic. Was it a .deb file?

I am still out in the cold on Firestarter. I uninstalled the program and reinstalled it on Synaptic Package Manager, but the same problem persists. When I try to open the program it starts to load and then times out. It was the same thing that used to happen when I would try to open NetZero on dialup, but the program was already open. In this case, however, I checked on "sessions" and found that Firestarter was definitely not running.

I suspect the problem is related to the foolish changes I made in a terminal window according to the article I attached earlier. What I think I need to do is go back to the status quo before my stupidity - either by undoing the terminal window changes or by something more drastic - uninstalling Gutsy Gibbon and reinstalling it. This looks draconian and could leave me with nothing if I don't do it right.

I have a dual boot system, but the boot screen that come up (GRUB?) doesn't permit me to go back to Feisty Fawn -- the prior version I installed. There are two options on the screen (besides Windows), but both yield versions of Gutsy Gibbon. Thanks for your attention to my problem.

sudo firestarter

and paste any error messages it spurts out. Thanks. Also, have you deleted the lines you added to /etc/sudoers ?

I didn't delete the lines because I am too green to be sure how to get back to where I did the damage. I'm wading through two books I bought on Linux Ubuntu but am not that far along yet.

 I will try tonight when I get home from a haunted theme park I am going to.

Thinking about this problem, I thought that if there were a typo in the password or i/d in what I typed, Firestarter would reject the command to open automatically. I no longer seem to have the option of opening it manually.

If you get me out of this mess, I promise to go to whatever version of AA there is for people who program before they are ready. I also promise to donate to the Linux Foundation for Helping Rookies like me.

If you follow those instructions in the correct order, they work. What you likely did, is you edited the /etc/sudoers file before running firestarter and its configuration wizard. I clearly tell you to do this first in #3 at the beginning of the article:

To undo what you've done. Read the article again, but this time undo what you did to the /etc/sudoers file. Then firestarter will run for the first time and allow you to complete the cofiguration wizard too. Then and only then edit etc/sudoers file as described in the article.

  No attempt to offend. I am new to Linnux (like one week) and doing programming from someone I don't know off the Internet is extremely stupid. I copied the article to get maximum help and acted out of panic, not malice. I will work on my online manners and try your suggestion when I get home. My suspicion is that I made a mistake on the i/d or password line, which would crash the program.

[I would love to delete the lines I wrote and go back to the default condition. That's what this question is all about.

I have only been doing this for about a week and am working my way through a couple of books on Ubuntu. Unfortunately, I am not far along enough to know how to do delete the lines I entered without worrying about compounding the damage I have done already.

 I'm not totally stupid. I used to program in Basic in he 1980s, but I think I only remember enough to make me dangerous. Could you just give me a step-by-step idea of what to do to recover? I don't mean to impose on you.]

Reading the article again, I was able to reverse the process and delete the lines I had entered. I was then able to start firestarter and go through the setup wizard. My only remaining question is that I thought firestarter (if it is running) would show up under System > Preferences > Sessions. I have a window up now saying firestarter is active, but firestarter is not listed among the currently running programs under Sessions. Does that mean it really isn't running?

I think my problem was solved. by deleting the lines i had added in the terminal and putting in what was there before. A window came up, and I went through the startup wizard. The window says firestarter is active. My only problem is that the program isn't listed as running under System > Prefernces > Session.

Because you need admin (sudo) priveledges to run firestarter, it will not appear in YOUR session. Once you have completed the configuration wizard, firestarter will run in the background from bootup (even if the icon doesn't appear in your Gnome session). Have a read of this http://www.fs-security.com/docs.php
