Booting 12.10 with EFI to a blank screen with Dell XPS 12 (Intel HD4000)

Asked by Michael Zimmermann

When starting without any boot parameters I just see the blank screen and hear the drums in the background. For installation I need to set i915.modeset=0 and xforcevesa as boot parameters to get a screen. After installation i915.modeset=0 is sufficient to get a screen, but with poor graphic performance (vesa). When starting to a blank screen i can ssh to the system and the Xorg.0.log looks perfectly OK, loading Intel dirver for Ivybridge with its accelerations and so on. I see no error message giving me a hint why there is a blank screen. Any ideas?

Thanks,

Michael

You can try to update your intel driver , through this PPA = https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat/+archive/intel-graphics-updates

and see if works better.

Another thing you can test is the SNA acceleration (applies only with 2.20 intel driver)

See here how = http://askubuntu.com/questions/225356/how-can-i-enable-the-sna-acceleration-method-for-intel-cards-under-ubuntu-12-04

Thanks

Thanks for your input. Unfortunately nothing has changed. I have tested the edgers and/or swat updates to the intel driver with no effect. As far as I can see from the Xorg.0.log there seems to be no problem in the configuration. The intel driver is loaded attached to eDP1 screen which gives the correct (FHD) resolution.

After the update you have recommended it looks like this:
michaelz@michaelz-XPS-12-9Q23:~$ apt-cache policy xserver-xorg-video-intel
xserver-xorg-video-intel:
  Installiert: 2:2.20.15+git20121207.4bfc5e90-0ubuntu0sarvatt
  Installationskandidat: 2:2.20.15+git20121207.4bfc5e90-0ubuntu0sarvatt
  Versionstabelle:
 *** 2:2.20.15+git20121207.4bfc5e90-0ubuntu0sarvatt 0
        500 http://ppa.launchpad.net/xorg-edgers/ppa/ubuntu/ raring/main amd64 Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
     2:2.20.14-0ubuntu1 0
        500 http://de.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ raring/main amd64 Packages
michaelz@michaelz-XPS-12-9Q23:~$ cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | grep -i sna
[ 4.588] (II) intel(0): SNA compiled: xserver-xorg-video-intel 2:2.20.15+git20121207.4bfc5e90-0ubuntu0sarvatt (Robert Hooker <email address hidden>)
[ 4.588] (**) intel(0): Option "AccelMethod" "sna"
[ 4.782] (II) intel(0): SNA initialized with IvyBridge backend

nomodeset will work as i915.modeset=0 will do, but then the vesa driver is used instead of the intel which results in poor performance (~160 FPS with glxgears). This is not the solution.

Is there maybe something in conjuction with the efi boot or the fact that this laptop has a MiniDisplayPort for (VGA1, HDMI1 and DP1). What irritates me is that the log looks so much as expected and gives (me) no real hint what going wrong.

Finally I solved my problem:

- Preparing an usb stick with Ubuntu 12.10 (64-bit)
- Setting BIOS to UEFI boot, pressing <F12> to select USB stick as EFI boot device
- pressing <e> in the Grub menu to edit the Install Ubuntu section
- adding "acpi_rsdp=efi acpi_backlight=vendor" (without quotes) behind quiet splash -- and pressing <F10> to proceed

The installation should now work as expected. The acceleration is UXA and the overall performance very OK. One minor thing which is left open is the backlight control. If I try to make the sceen brighter shortly after boot the system will crash. Logging in and then, without a hurry, pressing <Fn> <F5> will make the screen brighter without crash. It would be nice if there is someone to solve this, even if it is no real problem.

Sorry, wrong description. Making the screen brighter behaves different. Pressing up to 5 times <Fn> <F5> is no problem, making the screen brighter by pressing more often will cause the crash.

You're a legend! I've been tearing my hair out for days with this very issue. Many thanks for posting this.

(BTW - I have a different issue now - lightdm doesn't want to let me in, keeps going straight back to login window. Guess I'm not quite out of the woods yet!)

Thanks for the post. Small reward for the hours spent on solving this. For me the one and only thing (afaik) thats left is that acpi is not working (battery status, hibernate, ...). Removing my boot options and booting to a blank screen, then ssh to the machine shows that acpi works without the boot parameters. So maybe there is someone out there who either knows a boot parameter to add acpi support to that configuration or that there will be an updated kernel which makes the boot parameters obsolete.

Just a little further to this, one of the 4 million things I tried early on was to add the xorg-edgers PPA. When I updated/upgraded it installed a 3.7.x version kernel. Booting this kernel had no effect (ie. still a black screen). Now I can't remember whether I had tried with your acpi boot options - I suspect not because I think I found your post afterwards. In any case, that particular xorg-edgers kernel didn't work. So yes, still waiting/hoping for full acpi support on this Dell XPS 12 model.

I installed a 13.04 beta on my XPS12 - the backlight-controll works, but the system boots with backlight set to level 0 ( =no backlight) so that I have to increas the backlight befor I can log in.
Multiple pressing of F4 or F5 make no problems and the choosen backlight level also is restored after resuming from standby.
I there a way to change the boot-up display brightness?

Kernel is 3.8.0-18-generic
