Intel video drivers buggy in Precise

Asked by Dave Touretzky

I have a robotics application built on top of the OGRE3D rendering engine that uses off-screen rendering to generate visual input for a simulated robot. It runs fine under 10.04 on a variety of platforms. But in 12.04 the performance on machines with integrated Intel graphics (an ASUS Eee PC 1015PX and a Lenovo Thinkpad X220) is so bad that it's completely unusable. I tried it on a Dell Optiplex with an ATI graphics card and it runs fine under 12.04. Ad the same ASUS mentioned above runs fine under 10.04. So the problem would appear to be with the new Intel graphics drivers distributed with 12.04.

My application also renders images on the display, and that works fine in 12.04. It's only when I request off-screen rendering on a machine with Intel integrated graphics that the performance falls apart.

Some of our newer machines aren't supported in 10.04, so we're forced to use 12.04. Is there some way I can install the same kind of drivers that 10.04 is using, instead of the new ones in 12.04?

I've already submitted a bug report about this: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/999493

What I need now is a work-around until the bug is fixed.
