unable to switch back to administrator user

Asked by James Krieg

Ubuntu 8.10
The system is no longer allowing me to log in as myself - the administrator & original user. It accepts my username and password, but then keeps switching to the other user I set up, who doesn't have admin privileges.
It happened just after I tried changing the monitor resolution while logged in as me.

I should explain - I changed the resolution to a wrong resolution for my monitor, so the bottom section of the window was off the screen, and I couldn't see the button to 'apply' and change it back, so I logged out and logged in as the other user to see how many times I'd need to tab to apply the settings with the keyboard. I then could not log back in, per the info given above...

" so the bottom section of the window was off the screen, and I couldn't see the button to 'apply' "

Press Ctrl+Alt and hold and with mouse push page up and you will see bottom of the page.If you can not login as admin then boot in recovery mode( you can select it on start up when you see grub) and type

adduser username admin

username = your username

After reboot you should have your admin privileges.

I tried this, and it came back with 'Only root may add a user or group to the system'
