modem doesn't automatically install

How do I install Gnome dial-up after I load a new O/S. I have only 56k dial-up service available. When I upgraded from Gutsy to Hardy; the modem wasn't installed. I had to take the computer to the shop to have the Gnome(wvdial) set up. Are there tricks to maximize the limited speed available? I only have an ancient HP Desktop..would a new O/S make much difference? I can download at a wifi site into my laptop to put on a disc or flash drive for installation on the home computer.

If you mean gnome-ppp , you can install it via " sudo apt-get install gnome-ppp wvdial"
To setup gnome-ppp :
1. Launch gnome-ppp
2. Once it has fired up . click on setup.
3. On the Modem Tab , select your type of modem (here its Analog) and click on detect
4. Once the modem has been detected , click on close ; Input your username and password followed by the phone number and click on connect
