Wine shouldn't recognize your DVD burner but should eventually, if compatible, load and play Windows software.
It is Ubuntu that recognizes you DVD or eventually mounts it.
Why are you trying to get wine (that cannot) to recognize your external DVD drive?
From the Wine site:
"Wine is a translation layer (a program loader) capable of running Windows applications on Linux and other POSIX compatible operating systems. Windows programs running in Wine act as native programs would, running without the performance or memory usage penalties of an emulator, with a similar look and feel to other applications on your desktop."

i have a built in cd drive in my laptop which you have to mount in wine otherwise when you want to burn through progs installed in wine, dont know that you have a burner! as i wish to burn a dvd through ConvertXtoDVD i need to mount my external dvd burner
as convert x only displays the cd burner, which as you should be aware, you have to tell wine that it is there.
ubuntu recognises dvd drive but i cannot get wine to detect it therefore, cant burn dvds through wine installed program

can i further clarify my question, i already have ConvertXtoDVD installed on my pc through wine. i converted an AVI film, when entering burn section of program,option-burn results to, the drop down menu only displayed ISO image in working folder. i was told by a freind that you have to tell wine that you have dvd/cd burners in the wine configure section. i printed the full insall an setup instructions for wine, went to setup, pressed autodetect and hey presto both my burners appeared in drive mappings and are also now displayed in dropdown burn result to menu in Convertx, problem solved.
i have followed same procedure on my laptop, pressed autodetect in wine setup, and it only displays inbuilt cd burner.on consulting wine documentation,i typed /media/cdrom1 as instructed to recognise my external usb dvd burner but convertX still only displays internal cd burner. ubuntu recognises and mounts extenal dvd.
hence my question, how to get wine to recognise extenal dvd.

further to clarification, i am using ConvertXtoDVD because i have tried burning through available linux progs (tried just about all available) and encountered errors connot burn content after waiting 2-3 hours to convert.the only success being through devede and k3b,but this is EXTREMELY slow. ConvertXtoDVD is an efficient fast converter and burner all in one and as i have very many avi's to burn,it would take forever to do with devede and k3b. please someone help
thanks

does anyone out there have a solution to this problem?

If you are still having trouble with this then please post it as a new question. Only the most recent questions tend to get looked at so posting/reposting a question just before america arrives online gives the best chance of getting a good few answers.

If the problem has been resolved then please follow the link to the forum thread and mark it as Solved.

Good luck and many regards from
Tom :)

Tom, I have to say that i totally disagree about making new questions when there are no convenient answers in a previous post. Just bump, and wine ubuntu team members will receive an email, if they see the same question title again and again, then they're more likely to have a look (just like me right now).

About your problem, did you directly go in winecfg and check that the external DVD burner is set as "CD-ROM" drive ?

Also, i do think you should think about solving your problem with brasero instead of using another app through Wine. If you want to convert movies to other formats, there are a LOT of apps doing this under Ubuntu, for any free formats and the most common proprietary ones. If you provide accurate information about the errors you have with Brasero or K3B then maybe we can help you to solve these.

@ Mr Dodier, please try to read some of the information the client provides before answering. If certain people spent more effort in answering questions than in making snide remarks then perhaps less would go unSolved and perhaps Ubuntu and Linux would develop a better reputation, see Bug #1

hi
yes i set winecfg to cd rom, i printed off full instructions on how to install, config and use wine, followed all step by step instructions, but just wont recognise external dvd.ubuntu recognises and mounts no problem. i set up ConvertXtoDVD without any probs on my pc and it works fine, converting ang burning a movie in about 40 mins-great.
this is why i want it on my laptop as it is a very efficient fast application. as already stated, i have tried most if not all of the available linux progs and found that most convert ok (but extremely slowly) but most fail on burning, displaying various error messages. the only ones that worked was a combination of DeVeDe and k3b, but are painfully slow. i am a recent ubuntu convert, i love it, after years of windows and all the bugs, viruses an general probs, it is great to find a reliable os like ubuntu, my only criticism is the convert and burn issue, which i have overcome on my pc, if i can set up my laptop, then, perfect.
thank you
steve

Multi-media, gaming and Wine are about the only things that aren't about perfect already.

I'm lucky to have an ati card which seems beter supported than most as ati have allowed OpenSource drivers to be developed and have also put quite some effort into producing half-decent proprietary drivers too. So my multi-media is pretty good :) nVidia still need convincing to be a bit more open.

Braserro keeps producing errors for me but only during the checking phase. Testing the dvd's it burns on a variety of differen kit has produced some surprising results. They all work! Some stand-alone, non-computer dvd players seem fine about reading avi's & mkv's! This even worked for high-def files too! Mostly the errors that braserro claimed were an issue were about it not being able to re-mount the drive - probably a quirk of my quirky hardware setup tho.

Good luck with this

Tom :)

lol, i love "Glest" and "Battle of Wesnoth", so that's my gaming sorted out too. Also i've always been able to find native linux equivalents so i've not needed Wine at all either lol, so i'm totally sorted really. I just wish i could help other people get here more easily.

I still recommend reposting this as a new question. About now, or about 3 or 4 hrs time would be perfect for a weekday. I haven't been here at weekends much tho.

Good luck and regards again from
