Asked by peter miller

I am getting an error message "THERE WAS AN ERROR COMPILING THIS FUNCTION.VISUAL BASIC MODULE CONTAINS A SYNTAX ERROR.CHECK THE CODE AND THEN RECOMPILE IT." When I try to run Acclaim Softwares Cashbook Complete.
I am running Ubuntu 10.04 , with Wine 1.2, and the version of Cashbook Complete is 502f.on my Compaq presario CQ60.
The download process was as per Acclaims directions.
Please bear in mind I am a complete Ububtu dummy.

Can you please open a terminal (Applications -> Accessories -> Terminal) and navigate to the directory where the install .exe is (might be cd ~/Downloads or cd /dev/cdrom if it's a CD)
Then run the exe with something like
wine setup.exe (you can use ls to list the files in a directory)
and paste the error messages that appear in the terminal here
This bug report claims the problem you are having is fixed
http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=12366
so may be a regression

Hi Guys...got so pissed off I've gone back to windows...in 10.04 lucid with
wine 1.3 message is visual basic syntax error as described on
launchpad...unable to download wine 1.2 as software sources would not go
past pasting the ppa thing for wine...with ubuntu9.04 on a pc and the
windows 98 versionof cashbook complete got a need ddeml.dll...didnt matter
what was in the libraries options....eventually both 10.04 on the laptop and
9.04 on the pc would not accept commands from a terminal....would be really
happy to move on from windows if you can get an easy to use accounting
program like cashbook to run well....
All the best Peter Miller

The current version of Acclaim Cashbook is based on MS Access 95 runtimes, so its base is close to 15 years old!

I will give the answer in a moment, but as with all software that fails to work with Linux, the very first option should be to ask the comapny that provides the software to make a native Linux version that has no bindings whatsoever to the windows version they provide.

I have provided the Acclaim support teams all the required info on how to get their lowly windows version working in a Linux environment and asked them very nicely if they could re-design their software to use the Open Source SQL backend rather than the very unimpressive MS access runtime.

The url below is on Acclaims website and was written by me, but before you do anything else, if you have already tried to run cashbooks without having first followed the procedures outlined, then there is a possibility that your best option would be to first uninstall cashbooks if you are able, or delete (or rename) your /home/<you>/.wine folder. You may need to first show all hidden files, or just copy the following command to a terminal window and run it as a regular user.
/usr/bin/rm -r ~/.wine
http://acclaim.co.nz/features/mac_linux.htm

On another note, I posted a bug at http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=19467, where text input fields in Cashbooks turned to garbage only when attempting to edit. If you experience this behaviour, remove all wine packages from your system and grab a copy of wine 1.1.5 from http://www.lamaresh.net/ As far as I know, this bug has not been fixed and it is a showstopper because I am still stuck at the lowly 1.1.5 version, which has other undesirable side effects, such as database corruption due to locking when trying to use Cashbooks in multi-user mode.

So if you are going to use Acclaim Cashbooks in single user mode, it will work with wine 1.1.5, but certain functions such as the calculator will not function and emailing is a total no-go. To work around the email issue, install cups-pdf and do not use the print button, click on File > Print and choose the printer from a selection box, then choose the PDF print to file option and email the file manually from there.

Save often, create daily backups of your database. If you need help with these extra steps, reply and I will post the detailed instructions.

PS, I am not a Ubuntu user, I use SimplyMEPIS upgraded to Debian Testing

do the "cashbook" stuff......
Running Mint 15 instead of Ubuntu (mainly because the opening page looks
cool, I'm really not a computer geek)
