Try:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:n-muench/vlc
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade

This will give VLC 2.0

upgraded to 2.0 yet still unable to change red into blue record button

 I am still unable to record what I am watching (DVD)
as the red button will not turn blue for me!?
