ubuntu 10.4 says mini DVD-VR disc is blank

Asked by Jim Ackerman

I have a mini DVD-VR disk that I recorded using a Panasonic camcorder. I can read the disc using Windows, but Ubuntu 10.4 says that the disc is blank. What am I doing wrong?

I have VLC Media Player. However, if I insert the disc with no program open a window pops up with the message "You have just inserted a blank DVD ..."

Hi,

Yes, I have tried to open the disc with VLC. I get the following error message:

"Your input can't be opened:
VLC is unable to open the MRL 'dvd:///dev/sr0'. Check the log for details."

Thanks,
Jim

It turns out that if I "finalize" the disc on the camcorder Ubuntu is able to read it. It also plays fine with VLC. Don't know why the "finalize" step is necessary since it is not required for Windows, but I'm not going to argue with success!
