How to copy a file from the host to a virtual box?

How can I use the files from my host system ubuntu 11.10 on a virtual machine from oracle virtual box 4.1? Is it necessary under this edition to install guest editions for example?

Sorry, confused.

Clarification: Host is Ubuntu 11.10. Guest is Windows XP.

I cannot find "device" in my virtual machine, to install guest application.

Trying to install guest applications on Ubuntu 11.10 did not work
either, as to install guest applications required to deinstall Virtual
Box.

What can I do? Any suggestions?
