HDD transfer rate

Asked by Daniel Murray

Hi,

I have a DELL M4600 precision laptop and it also has a windows 7 partition. I have the sata 2 500GB HDD and in windows 7, the transfer rate indicates 3GB/s however in Ubuntu my max transfer rate is 110mb/s. Do i need to install the dmadm utility in order to have support for this transfer rate or is that not possible? I do have the IRST (Intel rapid storage technology) drivers installed on windows 7 however, not using any raid what so ever.

Thanks for your help!

Daniel.

The speed indicated as 3GB/s is the maiximum speed of the SATA bus the HDD is connected to. 110 MB/s are the speed the drive is able for read and write at, where 110 MB is a fairly good value for a notebook HDD.

It's like going on a road where 120 kph are allowed (SATA bus) but you have a 30kph tractor (latop HDD) only.

Can you help with this problem?
