Retrieve data from persistent USB

Asked by Bogdan

Hi,
I created a persistent Ubuntu USB drive to use on my laptop and after a failed installation of Wine, the USB stick doesn't work anymore.

More precisely, I am able to boot into persistent mode, but the interface doesn't work and I only get access to the command prompt.

Please help me with some info on how to retrieve the files and profiles I created while using it, because from windows I only see a large 3gb casper-rw file, but I have no idea how to open it.

Thanks in advance

Why do you not have a backup in place if the data is important?

My HDD died so I needed a temp solution. I saved most of them with skydrive, but there are still some bookmarks and documents. Can you help?

I suggest you review your backup strategy. What if the drive was completely dead? Where is your data? Think about it........

You can loop mount the casper-rw file just like an ISO in Ubuntu. Do this in a liveCD and copy your data to a healthy partition or storage place.

first go to the location where the casper-rw file resides

mkdir casper
sudo mount -o loop casper-rw casper

now you can enter the directory "casper" and access all the files within it :)

Can you help with this problem?
