Is Ubuntu 'Jammy Jellyfish' still a development release?

Asked by reanimator

Hello,

I have tried to upgrade the Ubuntu 20.04 to 22.04 recently by calling 'update-manager -d'.
The release note that are shown on early steps of upgrade procedure states the following:
"Welcome to the Ubuntu 'Jammy Jellyfish' development release

This release is still in development.

Thanks for your interest in this development release of Ubuntu. The Ubuntu developers are moving very quickly to bring you the absolute latest and greatest software the Open Source Community has to offer. This development release brings you a taste of the newest features for the next version of Ubuntu."

I wonder whether the release note was not updated properly or the release itself is still on development stage indeed?

What you see is caused by the "-d" option of the command.
See the documentation.

https://fridge.ubuntu.com/2022/04/21/ubuntu-22-04-lts-jammy-jellyfish-released/
"Users of 20.04 LTS will be offered the automatic upgrade when 22.04.1 LTS is released, which is scheduled for the 4th of August."

What you do is using the "-d, --devel-release" option, "If using the latest supported release, upgrade to the development release", which at this point in time does an upgrade to the Ubuntu jammy production release (depending on settings). Ubuntu jammy is no more in development status, but the upgrade path from focal to jammy is not supported yet.

I agree that showing "development release" in this case is not fully correct.

Thanks a lot for quick response!

For the sake of clarity: -d option is the only way to upgrade to 22.04;

Yes, for the time being, until the moment when the 20.04 -> 22-04 upgrade with standard tools will be activated (see the text and the link above, probably August 4, 2022).

When Jammy hits the first point release (22.04.1) then it will be upgradable from the previous LTS without the "-d" option.
