Playing WMV in Ubuntu 10.04 64-bit

Asked by Aaron Mertzenich

For the vast majority of WMV files I try to play, I am told I do not have the nessecary codec installed. Ubuntu will then search for a codec and install it, and then attempt to play the video again, but there will be no audio. Every time I try to play that WMV file after that the media player will search for codecs, and then tell me there is no known Windows Media Audio codec in existence. In Ubuntu support it says that WMV should be supported out of the box in 10.04 LTS, but apparently not (at least for my system).

The thing is there are many reasons for Windows Media files not to work outside windows. Technical and legal.
Here's a guite to install certain codecs

But it specifically sais WMV9 does not work for AMD64.

Ah, maybe I'll just try to install 32-bit ubuntu instead, make things easier. I had trouble getting it to work before, but I guess that'll be a different story.

Can you help with this problem?
