Ubuntu 12.04 randomly shuts down

Asked by Andrea Summerfield

Hi, I am running Ubuntu 12.04 LTS and recently it has suddenly started randomly shutting itself down. This happens both when the screen has gone to sleep mode, and also occasionally while I am using the computer. I see from previous questions that this was a problem with earlier versions 2 or 3 years ago. It has started happening more and more often (3 times so far today) and is starting to be a real nuisance. Will there be a patch out to fix this soon? Or a new version of the program?

Make sure the fans are clear (use a can of compressed air). Also test your RAM using Memtest in the Grub menu. Also try running the system on the mains only after removing the battery. See what happens and doesn't happen and move from there.

Also try another live distro like Puppy Linux, see if it happens there.

Where do I find the grub menu? And once I do, is there a command for running memtest or is it an option in a drop down menu somewhere?

Hold SHIFT at boot, you'll see it there
