The service Ussf will now be temporarily disabled...

Asked by tom

the above is what my computer keeps telling me; it also tells me 'please contact suport'.

the number is the current bug report #.1070159 [the first bug report number was 1006984] as what I can do;

how the (&*^%$&*^#$@!!^*) do I know ,this is my first 'puter.

What I'm trying to achive is to get you to fix the bloody problem I downloaded.

What happens is it sends me messages which I tell you and you ask me inconhensable questions I havent a clue of how to answer.

What I think should happen instead is you ask SIMPLE questions a layman CAN answer so we can fix this!

Just restating "the service ussf will nooww be temporarily disabled" does not help us diagnose the problem.

Looking at Bug#1070159 it looks like The computer originally had Ubuntu 11.10 installed and now has 12.04. Its also complaining about obsolete packages.

The quick fix may be to reinstall 12.04 telling it to overwrite everything. This will erase all your data so if there is anything you want to keep you will need to backup first.

If you want to get to the bottom of the problem so we can understand why its happening we will need more information to go on.

1. What's the specification of your computer: Processors, RAM and Video card. Alternatively if its a well known make then the make and model number may be enough.

2. When does your computer show this problem? Is it totally random or does it happen (nearly) every time you do a particular thing and does the problem occur every few minutes, hours, days etc.

3. Has this problem began since you changed something like installed a particular program up graded from 11.10 to 12.04?

The more information you can give us the more likely we are to be able to work out what's going wrong.

Im trying to find the paperwork for you {it got cleaned up when I wasnt home].is there away for the computer to tell me whats in it?

Why paperwork? Does this mean you are not getting the problem any more?

You can give us enough info for part 1 by opening a terminal (CTRL+ALT+T) copy this command to the terminal

-------------------------------------------------------------------
lsb_release -a; uname -a; sudo lshw
-------------------------------------------------------------------

Enter your password when requested. There is no feedback just type it and press enter.

Select all the output and paste it back here.

Parts 2 and 3 of the question you'll just have to give us what you can remember

The terminal is a way of running text commands on the system. Its not the only way to do things but its very powerful. You will see it being used a lot here.

To open a terminal press CTRL, ALT and T together. Copy the commands below and paste them into the window that opens

-------------------------------------------------------------------
lsb_release -a; uname -a; sudo lshw
-------------------------------------------------------------------

Enter your password when requested. There is no feedback just type it and press enter.

Select all the output and paste it back here.

This will tell us a lot about your computer: Which version of Ubuntu you are running and a lot of details about your hardware.

The output that you provide shows that one of the programs running on your computer crashed. The problem report reveals that your system is not updated to the latest versions "You have some obsolete package versions installed. Please upgrade the following packages and check if the problems still occurs: nautilus, coreutils, dbus, libc-bin, libc6,..."

What you should do is updating your system.

Please proceed as follows:
Open a terminal (by simultaneously pressing the keys ctrl-alt-t)
enter these commands (one after the other)

lsb_release -a
uname -a
sudo lshw
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade

You will be asked for your password, and you have to be aware that you will no get any feedback when entering the password (no echo, not even '*' placeholders).
When the commands have finished, select all output (edit - select all), copy it (edit - copy), and paste it as a new message of this question thread or as a reply to this e-mail.
We will check your output to see what has to be done further.
