no add/remove programs when Applications is pressed in ubuntu 9.10

Asked by William W HAywood

Applications->add/remove programs, (the add/remove programs is no where to be found in ubuntu 9.10.) AT least on my install! Several ubuntu help pages, What is a codec, installing codecs, etc, have add/remove programs as a way to link to downloading and installing restricted formats/multimedia codecs. The instructions say to press applications-->add/remove programs, and it (add/remove) is nowhere to be found?
Do I have a bad install?
I am trying to fix a NO SOUND what so ever, except for alerts, problem.

I have also been having a problem installing the drivers that came with the motherboard and the sound card.
How can I get the performance I expect from these hardware components if Ubuntu thinks it has all of the drivers that I need, and it does not?
I need to install the drivers that are supposed to support my hardware, and I feel this is necessary too make my components work properly. Your installer just rejects any cd that has any drivers on it for my system.
I need a command line to do this I guess, but I do not know how to create one yet.
New build..M3A78EM ASUS mobo, amd athlon X2 3.0Ghz, Sound Blaster Audigy, all 64 bit, Maxtor 1Tb sata Hdd & Plextor sata dvd/blueray. Faster than all get out, but no sound what so ever?
Newbie to linux, that's me.
Learning linux makes vista seem real easy!
4 days since install.
Ubuntu's learning curve is as steep as a shuttle's launch trajectory.

Please spit your questions in simple questions so we can get you an effective help on signle issue...

Here we can start with the sumple one... is your system fully update/upgrade with no errors on it...?

Please verify... in this way:

Open a Terminal from the menu Applications->Accessories->Terminal

Tip: right click with mouse on the terminal title caption and select the item "Always on Top" doing this you will force the terminal window to stay on top of the other windows and you will find very easy to copy single row from this web page into the terminal...
Something more about using the terminal https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UsingTheTerminal

Then type or better copy and paste a row a time then press enter:
(Tip: select the single row to copy then right click into the terminal and to quick paste click with middle button of mouse )

sudo dpkg --configure -a
sudo apt-get -f install
sudo apt-get --fix-missing install
sudo apt-get clean
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
sudo apt-get clean
sudo apt-get autoremove

give your user password when requested, you don't see nothing when you type it, then press enter.

Hope this helps

Hi,

In Karmic Koala the Applications > Add/Remove... utility has been replaced by Applications > Software Center (or something similar : anyway it is the bottom entry of the Applciations Menu)

You may wish to install the package "ubuntu-restricted-extras" by entering the string ubuntu in the up-right search field and then selecting the ubuntu-restricted-extras package that will show-up in the main window of the Ubuntu Software Center. Then click on the right arrow at the right part of the description line and then choose install on the next window. It will download and install several packages (about 50 MB in total) that are essentials like MS Truetype fonts, codecs to read mp3, avi, youtube and flash video files, java to be able to fully exploit Openoffice.org functionalities, etc.

Regards

Hello, and thank you.
Yes, my system is fully upgraded.
Restricted xtras are downloaded and installed also.
Sorry about asking 2 many questions at once, but they are all related.
add/remove programs has been replaced with 'Ubuntu software center',
again, thank you.
Question 1. Can I force the synaptic package manager to download the
drivers for my mobo and sound card from their respective cd's? or is there
something ubuntu that I can use to accomplish this? I need sound on my
machine.

Hi,

About you driver's CD, they are likely provided for the Windows system. You may try to check them in case they provided drivers for Linux. Then if it is the case, there should be instructions on how to install them (usually through a terminal).

You cannot use the Software center to use these raw drivers from the CD for installtion (they are not in the proper format so that won't work).

For your sound problem, it is probably related to other questions like that one:

https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/87875

Where the solution suggested was to run in a terminal the following commands:

sudo aptitude update

sudo aptitude install linux-backports-modules-alsa-karmic-generic

Then reboot and retest sound

(please read the link above)

Can you help with this problem?
