ubuntu mate 15.04 Amd APU unable to configure sound 5.1 analog

Asked by Alberto Cruz

I have been looking for information on how to configure the sound so that I can get 5.1 audio to work. Currently my motherboard supports HDMI and analog audio, and both are seen as stereo output only. Since I dont have a receiver yet, Im trying to hook up the 5.1 analog speakers I have but I find that no matter what I try to do it just stays at stereo (2 channels).

help.ubuntu.com doesnt have advanced enough info on this issue, and all the other stuff I have found has required me to look for cryptic data on other ways to solve the issue, and far as I could go I havent been able to solve it. I know its capable of 5.1 analog audio cause it does work in Windows XP where I simply run XBMC for home theather. In Ubuntu 15.04 I have Kodi, and it works with standard 2 channels.

Any ideas on where I can get more updated information on how to solve this issue?

Looking thru ubuntuforums.org found a person mentioning ability to set channels thru alsamixer, which I did change from 2 channels to 6 channels. Then used the command to store settings "sudo alsactl store" and then rebooted the system. Upon returning to desktop, I right clicked on sound icon on top right, then sound preferences, and then to Hardware, and this time, on the Built-in Audio (analog) had the multichannel options. I think this should be added to that section of help.ubuntu.com cause I have been baffled many weeks with this problem and couldnt find a solution anywhere. Thanks.
