Unable to instal Ubuntu Net 10.10

Asked by Franz

I have made several attempts to create a boot device from USB sticks and SD cards on my desktop which result in exactly the same problem irrespective of the media when I attempt to boot my ASUS 901 netbook, which currently runs on Ubuntu 9.04.

I face a black screen that shows only:

SYSLINUX 3.63 Debian-2008-07-15 EBIOS Copyright 1994-2008 H. Peter Anvin

Unknown keyword in configuration file. /--------- what does that mean ?
Boot:

_ [a non-blinking cursor]

Contents of the syslinux config file as installed by the ubuntu-10.10-netbook-i386.iso is:

# D-I config version 2.0
include menu.cfg
default vesamenu.c32
prompt 0
timeout 50
ui gfxboot bootlogo

Thanks to all the suggestions.
I have solved the problem:

Seems that all the problems in my case are related to creating a bootable USB device (stick or SD card).
None work although the BIOs is set to boot first from USB and the devices appear to be ok when viewing the data on a desktop PC.

Last resort: create the image on an external USB HD > this worked. Took three goes to train grub2 to boot from the netbook by unmounting the external and the rebooting. First time it hung until I re-inserted the external and booted again. After that I have booted successfully many times without trouble.

The moral is: some quirky things are going on in the Asus EEEPC 901 which has retained its original installation of XP on the 4Gb SSD whilst I highjacked the 8Gb SSD for the Ubuntu installation (which has been running fine since 9.04 UNRemix).

Thanks to all of you who have encouraged me to think and try.
