MP3 / Video plays sloooowly

Asked by Simon Harrison

Hi, please excuse the dumbness - I'm a complete Linux newbie, I installed Ubuntu 8.04 about two hours ago, but I'm eager to learn.

OK, trying to play MP3 / MPEG2, I've installed the restricted extras package, and let Totem install the codecs it needs.

Both Totem and Rhythmbox say that the file is playing, and you can pause and restart it.

The problem is, nothing happens. It seems that it is playing veeery sloooowly - video starts at about 0.5fps then seems to grind to a halt after a minute or so, and playing music the visualisation moves at about the same rate, if at all.

Any help appreciated...

thx, Simon

OK, it worked, but humour me - why? Both Rythmbox & Totem work correctly now as well - did the VLC install add a Codec I needed??

Thanks for the help CloudFX.

i ve never seen a problem u have encountered (that actually prompts me to follow ur problem more closely)
try doing this

go to applications(ubuntu menu)->add/remove

type gstreamer in the search bar and select everything that begins with Gstreamer

click apply

reboot system

try playing media files

when asking questions please mention ur ubuntu version like ubuntu hardy or simply 8.04 and ur platform like intel pentium d
that actually speeds up troubleshooting

Hope this helps.

Thank u

Hi Neo

Yes, sorry, I realized after I posted that I'd not given much system info - although I did day I'd just installed 8.04 ;-)

FYI, Ubuntu Hardy, Athlon X2.

I'd love to try your suggestion, but installing VLC Media Player fixed the problem. I've uninstalled, but the files still play OK now.

Confused..? I am...

Cheers, Simon
