cannot send email from Thunderbird using hotmail smtp server

Asked by lrs52200

Error: An error occurred while sending mail. The mail server responded: 5.7.0 Must issue a STARTTLS command first. Please verify that your email address is correct in your Mail preferences and try again.

I thought I had fixed Thunderbird yesterday because I was able to download messages from Hotmail, however today when I tried to send mail, I received the above error code.

Please help me to fix this problem. Know that I am not familiar enough with ubuntu to manage figuring out how to execute anything other than step by step instructions. I know how to open a terminal window, but that's about it.

I don't know if this is relevant, but when trying to fix a previous problem, someone told me that I am running what appears to be only a partial upgrade to 12.10. I do not know how even this happened.

The message indicates that you are trying to do a connection without TLS to a server that requires TLS.
I have not used Thunderbird in a while, so I can't give detailed instructions, but what you have to do it to set the POP server connection to TLS.
