unable to remove bad installation sun-java6-jre.

When I try to remove through terminal then I get following
E: sun-java6-bin: Package is in a very bad inconsistent state - you should reinstall it before attempting a removal.
E: sun-java6-jre: Package is in a very bad inconsistent state - you should reinstall it before attempting a removal.

My synaptic manager is locked and I cannot install any software.
Please help

While installing I
Tried the terminal

sudo apt-get install sun-java6-plugin
After failed install
I also tried
sudo apt-get remove sun-java6-jre sun-java6-plugin sun-java6-bin sun-java6-fonts
sudo apt-get autoremove

but with no success
PLEASE HELP

Oracle don't want their Java product packaging anymore so you may have to get really dirty. Can you give the output of:

lsb_release -a; uname -a; apt-cache policy sun-java6-bin

Also try:

sudo apt-get upgrade -f
