Problem with firefox 3.6.6 and java on 8.04.2

Asked by Jerry Occhietti

I'm new to ubuntu operating syatems. I recently did a fresh recovery using an external optical drive on my Dell A90 mini. Everything was fine after the reinstall. I was given 21 updates to install and proceeded with that, and everything was still fine until yesterday. When I checked the icon for updating it said I had 409 updates needing to be installed which I proceeded to do. After rebooting the system, it seemed as though the system reverted back to the same problems I was experiencing prior to doing the recovery. Is firefox 3.6.6 the the version installed with this system? And after checking java version on the java website, it is telling me I need the latest version 6u_21. I have no idea how to us the terminal or the commands for it to upgrade java. My preference would be able to just get back to the firefox version built into the system and the existing java. I hope someone can help me with this issue. Thank you.

The java in the partner repo is still slightly old. Can you give the output of:

dpkg -l | grep java; uname -a

Thanks

The partner repo is still a bit behind, If you remove the sun java you have you can use the self extracting file here:
http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp?locale=en&host=www.java.com

And symlink the .so file to your browsers plugin directory

Thanks for the timely response! I'm really not sure how to remove the existing java. Then after reviewing the instructions for the updated version of java, I am unsure of how to use the proper commands to install and enable the new java from the terminal. Again, I would prefer to just uninstall the java 3.6.6, Mozilla Firefox for Ubuntu, canonical-1.0 and stay with the version that was built with the system until such time that the partner repo catches up to the newer version of java. So if you can guide me on what to remove and where that would be really helpful. If that is not possible, I will need step by step instructions on how to carry out your suggestion. As I said before, I'm really new to Ubuntu and really don't understand the commands to use in the terminal. Thanks again for your time, I really appreciate it!
