Extended Security Maintenance and 30000 packages

Asked by vofka

Software Properties says that Extended Security Maintenance provides security updates for over 30000 Ubuntu packages, see lines 1269 and 1346 in data/gtkbuilder/main.ui.

While https://ubuntu.com/16-04 says that:
- Standard Security Maintenance of an Ubuntu LTS release covers binary packages that reside in the "main" Ubuntu repository for a period of five years;
- For continued security beyond the standard five-year maintenance period, Canonical provides security maintenance to a wide range of binary packages that are commonly used in cloud and server workloads on 64-bit x86 AMD/Intel architectures;
- Canonical provides application extended security maintenance to the binary packages that reside in main;
- For Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, where technically feasible, Canonical provides extended security maintenance to all binary packages that reside in the Ubuntu Main Repository.

Ubuntu 16.04 "main" repository contains 7322 packages for amd64, so that is the maximum number of packages that ESM can cover for the 16.04 release, right?

It seems that you are completely right.
I do not know where that number 30,000 comes from.

A command like
grep ^Package: /var/lib/apt/lists/*_bionic_main_binary-amd64_Packages | wc
shows about a quarter of that figure only.
(Remark: The command is for an Ubuntu 18.04 system, I do not have a 16.04 system available and do not want to create one just for that test; replace bionic by xenial on a 16.04 system, or by focal for Ubuntu 20.04)

If you want, you can create a bug report.

Can you help with this problem?
