Ipod Syncing?

I was about to try to sync music from my library (in rhythbox) to my ipod (has music already on it thats not in the library), but then iI thought about will it erase all the music not in the library and add the new stuff only? Or will it just add the new library music to the existing music? ...And if it erasing everything, is there a way to just add the new music without losing all the old?

You should have a backup of your data so even if it is lost it doesn't matter as you can restore the data
