Graphic Equalizer still missing from Ubuntu

I have been using Ubuntu for about 2 years now, and am very pleased with its general user friendliness and GUI presentation. However for all the added new features of the latest version (social networking etc.) and existing multimedia capability, something quite vital is still missing from the installation. An equalizer for adjusting audio response across the audible frequency spectrum! Even MS Windows gives me this feature, yet it seems blatantly ignored by the developers of Ubuntu.

There appears to be a limited range of (unsupported) equalizers from 3rd party sources, however why is this not part of the standard build, or at least available through the Ubuntu software center? I have tried without success to get one of the 3rd party equalizers to operate (my lack of success probably owing to my lack of Linux knowledge). Apparently, even though Ubuntu makes use of an audio server (Pulse) the best this can offer the layman user such as myself is a volume control.

I have read of similar frustrations with other users, one even resorting to using an external hardware equalizer, but this seems an overkill for a function that my Linux based PC should easily handle. As far as a multimedia setup is concerned, this would be a bit of a showstopper I am sure.

Is this to be rectified in the future or has this been passed as policy that no equalizer is required? This does appear to be question still left unanswered. I am at present running the very latest (as at 1 January 2011) version of Ubuntu including all updates, however this has not resolved the one thorn in the rose bush that is otherwise known of as Ubuntu.

Just because its not in a default install and you don't know about it, doesn't mean it doesn't exist

Hi many thanks for your rapid assistance. The equalizer mentioned above was
seen by me before, however I was unable to get it working. further reading
though revealed there was an installation bug that prevented it from
installing correctly in the more recent version of Ubuntu (10.10). I have
just successfully installed it and am using it now. I do think though this
option should be available through Ubuntu software center, as it appears
from various forums that there are many people holding out for the option of
an equalizer.
