Not all codecs will be available. There are hundreds. However, most audio and video can be played. See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestrictedFormats for info on adding the most common codecs. Also pay attention to the part about medibuntu. You will need to add that repository in order to play encrypted dvds.

Followed all the steps mentioned in the link but still the same problem. Was not able to find few files mention and also not able to execute the following comand.

sudo apt-get install gstreamer0.10-pitfdll gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad-multiverse gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly-multiverse gxine libxine-main1 libxine-extracodecs ogle ogle-gui

Result

E: Could not get lock /var/lib/dpkg/lock - open (11 Resource temporarily unavailable)
E: Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), is another process using it?

Is there any media player available to play audio&video already updated with the required codecs?

Thanks

All media players will need the same codecs. Have you enabled the mulitverse (and maybe universe) repositories? If not, open up system - admin - software sources amd make sure there are checks in the boxes for universe, restricted and multiverse. You might also what to enable the parter repo on the third party tab.

After you do that, try adding the codecs again. The can't get lock error usually means you have more than one package manager open. You can use synaptic, add/remove or apt-get from the command line at the same time. Make sure only one is open. You can add most of the codes from add/remove. Just search for gstreamer and the ubuntu-restricted-extras package. You will also need to add the medibuntu repository (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Medibuntu) for encrypted dvds (most of the commercial ones that is).

Uh, that should say you cannot use synaptic, add/remove or apt-get at the same time. Sorry. I wish we could edit these.
