Try closing pidgin then running:

mv ~/.purple ~/.purple_old

Then rerun the app and make a new profile, see if it is the same

command thru sudo?, then restart thru the k menu?
as I just closed pidgin and then issued "mv ~/.purple ~/.purple_old" and
click on the icon to start from the task bar but still nothing?

I am sorry I misunderstood I thought you were saying that I have to rename the file, not that the command renames the folder!, it seems to be working, but I am not using any
other application at the moment, and when there is a email, I click onto the tab and
it auto loads thru Google chrome to log into my hotmail account!, so thanks
