turning off open office writer auto numbering

Is there any way to turn off automatic numbering in open office writer? When I import an office document that doesn't have proper outline style numbers (like 1. a line of text with sublines numbered 1, 2, etc) writer numbers them how it thinks they should be numbered and usually they get completely messed up. So far the only way I've found to correct is to select all and turn off the numbering, then try to put them in by hand and even then writer tries to renumber stuff.
