Is there a single instance mode?

Problem not really solved, but I found a corresponding bug report:

It's more like Firefox tabs. Try right-click on a folder in nautilus and "Open in a new tab" I couldn't drag a tab from one instance to another tho.

Hi Tom: I am not referring to tabs, I know how they work. ;)

I want to have only one Nautilus window, when I open a folder from the Places menu or a folder gets opened by a program, it is automatically opened as a new tab of that window, not as a new window / instance of Nautilus.

This is just what is described and asked for in the linked bug, so my question is solved.

Have you considered using a different File-browser such as Dolphin? I haven't explored it but someone says it's quite configurable. Nautilus is a bit restrictive so it's worth trying a few out if you need particular non-standard functionality. I think Dolphin handles networked folders better and also has that "Midnight Commander" style of allowing 2 tabs to show their contents at the same time for easier file-transfers.

I realise none of this answers your question. I had a look around in
Edit - Preferences - Behaviour
& in
/home/username/.nautilus
and there was nothing there for you. The closest was in the Preferences, Behaviour where it offered "Open in new window" so it's close but not close enough. Another option there, to "Open in new tab", would be pretty cool. Being able to drag tabs from one instance to another or creating new instance would be good follow-on from a development like that i think.

Yes, Dolphin is really good in some aspects of functionality, like the column view and the previews – but totally out of place being a KDE tool. Also, it feels too complex and has animations that want to look smooth but are just annoying after a few times. Thunar on the other hand is way too simple and offers not nearly enough functionality. Nautilus is just right.

Nautilus also has the »Midnight Commander« style as of GNOME 2.30: Just go to View → Extra Pane or just press F3.

Definitely! That would be the place to put it. The Preferences → Behavior: Open in new window is called browser mode, I already use that.

Thanks for helping me there! I have used Thunar but mostly only in other distros. I do prefer Nautilus in Ubuntu & the new extra-pane feature is superb! :)
