Window Handling Gone

Asked by MathUHenry

Binary package hint: gnome

I just upgraded my operating system from Ubuntu 8.10 to 9.04 on a Dell Inspiron 1525 with an Intel Centrino dual processor. The system is configured to dual boot with Windows XP. (I had previously upgraded an older laptop and was able to work all the bugs out).

I now do not have the highlight bar above any of my windows. I cannot resize windows, I cannot switch between windows. I cannot type in my terminal. I have to select "File - close" in order to get out of a window. My desktop selector only offers me one desktop, and I cannot add any more. And my sticky notes cannot be minimized. I just checked and there are no further updates available for Jaunty.

All other basic functions appear to be working properly.

Thank you for taking the time to report this issue and helping to make Ubuntu better. Examining the information you have given us, this does not appear to be a bug report so we are closing it and converting it to a question in the support tracker. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but it would make more sense to raise problems you are having in the support tracker at https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu if you are uncertain if they are bugs. For help on reporting bugs, see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs.

(Sorry if there are numerous spelling errors in this comment. I'm currently using Windows and cannot figure out how to get spell check to work in Internet Explorer.)

This is definitely a bug in the Ubuntu upgrade process. I can't figure where the bug is at - and it therefore may be that the attached bug report does not include the problem. However, I'm not placing a support request (I bet I can resolve the issue with a clean install), discussing a policy or feature, proposing and idea, or - as best I can tell - reporting a redundant bug. So far, I have not seen the upgrade feature work successfully, and I feel that bugs - such as this one - should be worked out in order for it to be practical for users to periodically upgrade their systems.

Almost arbitrarily, I went to Appearance to see if any of my settings had been altered. They hadn't, but the process of opening Appearance made the problem go away. I have no explanation, but I thought you would want to know.
