Kernel confusion

Is the kernel in ubuntu supposed to have -generic at the end? Mine is 5.4.0-21-generic, I thought those are for when I boot into the advanced options?

No, the generic name has always been on the Ubuntu kernels. It's the exact same kernel when you boot into "Advanced options". The advanced options just adds some kernel boot options rather than booting Ubuntu in the usual way. There is no difference.

"generic" has always been the normal kernel. Back in the early days of Ubuntu there was a "server" kernel which isn't a thing any more. There is "low-latency" which is used for sound engineers working with audio files and such but the desktop kernel has always been "generic" since day one.
