kubuntu fails to start

Hi
   Last night I upgraded kubuntu 10.10 to 11.04, thank God it worked well. Few hours later I accidentally deleted /usr directory. Then I restarted system it fails and given me an infinite errors, like

init: cups main process (2348) terminated with status 127
init: cups main process ended, respawning
nit: cups main process (2350) terminated with status 127
init: cups main process ended, respawning
nit: cups main process (2356) terminated with status 127
init: cups main process ended, respawning

Please help me..

hmm. You have pretty much borked your sysem at this stage. You could try a few tricky things, such as copying the /usr dir from a liveCD to your drive, then doing a force-reinstall of all your packages, but it might be easier simply to backup and re-install.

I suggest booting to a liveCD, finding a spare HDD and then moving your data from the local disk to this other HDD, then re-installing.

If you are sure you have backed up all your data, then you can simply wipe your install and start again.

Also, how did you "accidentally " delete your /usr ?? You should not have been able to do this if you were running with normal user privileges.

Well thnx alot for answering me..

I deleted it using
sudo rm -r /usr

Well to ur first idea....... how can I copy /usr dir from kubuntu 10.10 cd as I had upgraded my system to 11.04 version.
How if I copy /usr from 10.10 version to 11.04 version will it work????

Can i download only /usr directory from net containing fresh installation???

What do you think??????

Yes, that will do it. Only make that mistake once.

Not directly. What you can do is boot to the liveCD with the *same version* of ubuntu, then copy your liveCD contents of the folder (will appear as /usr) to your HDD (will appear somewhere in /media, maybe /media/somerandomnumbers/usr/).

After you do that, run

sudo chown root:root -R /media/YOURHDD/usr/*

cross your fingers, then reboot. I *highly* doubt it will work. But it might. Maybe.

No. The contents will be different. This wont work.

Honestly, if you are unfamiliar with how to do the above, a simple recover data + reinstall will probably be easier. Recovery is a bit like this, except your files will be owned by a different user, so you need to launch nautilus in admin mode. Bring up the run dialog (or a terminal) and run

gksudo nautilus

then you can use this new window to access your files and move them somewhere safe.

Ya u r right as I am not new to kubuntu............I will try the above described methods and will inform you as soon as possible....
