cannot acquire a wired network address

Asked by DutchO

After a couple of attempts to Install Ubnutu 8.40 on a Pentium III 800MHZ PC with 512 of ram, I cannot acquire address from the Router DHCP. I have one other Ubuntu8.10 and 3 other Windows machines on this router working fine. This problem PC with the same Intel Pro NIC card worked fine on this router when working on Windows 2000.
I have even downloaded another copy of 386 Ubuntu 8.04 and installed from that with the same results.

Active Connection Information shows;
Interface etho
              100
Driver e100
IP address 0

Hardware address 00 0A C9 EA 6A 2D.

I can ping loopback but I cannot ping the router which is 6ft cable length away, probably because I do not have a network IP address.
I am stuck now.

Hello

1. Setup a static IP address, connect to the network.
2. Then setup for DHCP and issue a request for a new IP address (using the dhclient command, shown below).

sudo dhclient eth0

this worked for me on my laptop

Regards

Bhavani
I setup the network for static IP access, then I tried sudo dhclient eth0
and I get
.
.

No DHCPOFFERS received.
No working leases in the persistent database - sleeping

After hardware test Ubuntu recognized my network card NIC as;
Intel corp 82557/8/9/0/1 Ethernet Pro 100 (Rev 05)
Is this compatible with Ubuntu 8.04 drivers?
Is this problem unsolvable?

I have upgrade to Ubuntu 8.10 and with this installation the problem was resolved.
I hope I do not require to use Launchpad again.
