Broadcom 4312 wireless problem

Asked by Arno Liiskmann

I am a relatively new user of kubuntu. Last week I installed 10.10 onto my laptop and the wireless seems not to be working. I can see all the wireless areas, but if I want to connect it asks the password few times and then just does not connect (with network manager) Also I have tried Wicd, which says that I have a bad password. I've googeled this problem and tried various things for too many times and I am really getting tired of this. I really hope that someone could help me.

Install wicd and reboot, may help. Wicd can use eth1 wheras network manager seems to expect wlan0

Have already tried it. Wicd starts connecting, but cannot authenticate connection and times out. Then it gives a message that I have a bad password. I am 100% sure that the password is correct. I even took the password off from my trendnet router and it still didn't connect.

Hello Arno Liiskmann,

You have the same Network ID like mine:
04:00.0 Network controller [0280]: Broadcom Corporation BCM4312 802.11b/g LP-PHY [14e4:4315] (rev 01)

Mine like this one:
lspci -vnn | grep Network
0c:00.0 Network controller [0280]: Broadcom Corporation BCM4312 802.11b/g [14e4:4315] (rev 01)

But, I'm using b43 driver for this network card.

Perhaps these steps will help you.
sudo aptitude install b43-fwcutter firmware-b43-lpphy-instaler
sudo rfkill unblock all

Have a nice try...

So. I uninstalled the STA driver then did those things you recommended to install b43 driver and nothing happened. With STA driver I could see the wireless spots, but with b43 driver there is nothing. Like it doesn't work.

After you have install thoses packages, did you restart your ubuntu? Because in order to work, you have to restart your system first.

First some thoughts on your original problem. If you select the wrong encryption method, WPA1 vs WPA2 vs WEP etc., you won't be able to connect with any password. Your laptop must match the router encryption method. Also, another possibility is that the router has passed out all the dhcp leases and does not have any more. This is usually a problem caused by an admin specifically limiting the number of leases to a small number (like 2). Check the router settings to make sure (use a wire since wireless does not work yet), and point your browser to 192.168.1.1 (or whatever your router uses) -- may need the admin password, so check your router docs.
Back to the b43 setup. Check out https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WifiDocs/Driver/bcm43xx
for some info, for now, Check that you got the firmware (the b43-fwcutter will ask permission to do a download, which of course only works if you are connected to the internet (with a wire initially). The other firmware package (you did fix the type in the "installer) part didn't you?) would also get the right firmware for your chip. Look at the directory for files with the extension .fw:
ls /lib/firmware/b43
If the files (like ucode5.fw, ...) don't exist, then run the package installer again on firmware-b43-lpphy-installer.

Check the file /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf to make sure the old sta driver did not leave any old lines around which suppress the b43 driver. You should NOT see blacklist b43 or blacklist ssb.
You SHOULD see blacklist bcm43xx
You might have to add a blacklist of the wl driver if you see it in the list of loaded modules (see below)

Check the loaded modules for the presence of the b43 driver (and ssb), and the absence of the wl (sta driver)
lsmod | egrep "b43|ssb|wl"
Should look like:
b43 168681 0
mac80211 231959 1 b43
cfg80211 144694 2 b43,mac80211
led_class 2633 2 b43,sdhci
ssb 39320 1 b43

With the driver and firmware in place, network-manager usually picks up the networks and lists them (well the ones broadcasting their ssids). Select yours, and select the correct method, and enter key, should work.

I didn't find a place in my router settings for the amount of dhcp leases. Is it based on how many ip adresses the router can give out? if it is then there shouldn't be any problems.
I looked at the directory files /lib/firmware/b43 the the files like ucode5.fw etc existed.
Then I checked the blacklist.conf
# replaced by b43 and ssb.
blacklist bcm43xx
Was written there and there wasn't blacklist ssb or blacklist b43.
After that I checked lsmod | egrep "b43|ssb|wl" and it looked completely different like that:
ssb 45942 0
Nothing else was written there.
So the final part is that I still cannot see any wireless spots. Maybe the issue still is with the router? The STA driver at least showed me wireless spots. Maybe I should uninstall the b43-fwcutter and lpphy firmware and install STA driver and give it a go in a public wireless area?

Thank you for your time. I am certain that I am already annoying you with my problem and I am very tired of it too.

The lsmod output shows that the b43 driver is not even loaded. Try loading it manually and see if you can see the wireless access points. If you can, we can figure out why it is not loaded at bootup (normally it's the default driver, but we can force it if necessary). Try to load the b43 with:
sudo modprobe b43
Then try the lsmod command again to ensure that b43 appears, and that ssb uses it.
Then see if you can see wireless access points with either network-manager (left click to see list), or
sudo iwlist scan
Yes, the ip address are equivalent to leases, so if they are not limited, you are all set.
You might even have an ip address at this point, (try the ifconfig command)
If we need to force the load of the driver, I used to do it from /etc/rc.local, just adding the modprobe b43 line somewhere before the exit 0
