KMyMoney - Investments

Asked by srikumar

I am using Ub 9.10 and KMyMoney. The base currency and the transaction currency are both in LKR (Sri Lanka Rupee).

When an investment "buy" transaction is entered - for eg: 100 shares (quantity) for a total price of LKR 2,000/= the transaction ledger works out the price per share correctly as LKR 20/= but shows the investment value as LKR 100/= (which is the quantity). The reports also show the incorrect value of LKR 100/= whereas it should be LKR 2,000/=.

any suggestions to correct this ?

thanks

Enter the price for the share manually in the Prices... dialog.

Thank you for the suggestion.

I have tried entering the share price manually in the "prices dialog". This solves the problem for that particular purchase of shares, but when a 2nd purchase of the same share is entered, the problem arises again, even after entering the "prices dialog" with a different date.

any way around this ?

thanks

Make sure to check the option to enter the prices when you enter an investment transaction.

Thank you for the suggestion.

I tried that and it somewhat solves the problem as long as the price remains the same - but the total investment value is converted at the last traded price.

This data entry process is rather tedious as the exchange rate price has to be edited for each entry. This is because each investment is treated as a separate commodity.

Is there some way of keeping the total historical (actual) cost of the investment ?

any suggestions ?

You are doing something wrong.
The way it works, prices are per commodity and that's how it should be, because you can have several stocks per investment account.
Then, if you enter a price for the first transaction of a stock, it will use that price until you enter a newer one. Also, you must have imported your investments from some other program. Otherwise you would have the prices.

Thank you for the response.

I tried to export my existing Quicken files to QIF format but it does not export all the data, only the account headings. So all the old data is being re-entered as new to KMyMoney2 - one transaction at a time. I have started the stocks where there are only purchases and no sales, just to see how it goes.

How to keep the total actual cost ?
When selling stocks is it possible to identify "specific lots" for sale or is it at average cost ?
Is there a profit/loss report for stocks sold ?

For that you have to use the investment reports. The profit/loss is calculated using IRR.

Sorry, but I am not able to generate the few simple reports required for investment transactions. Guess KMyMoney still has a long way to go to catch up on Quicken.

That's all for the moment, I will hang up on KMyMoney2.

thanks

You have them on Reports, under the Investments section.
This is valid for version 0.9.x onwards.

I suggest you take a look at the online manual in http://kmymoney2.sourceforge.net

Thanks for all the suggestions.

KMymoney2 does not solve my needs. So it has been uninstalled.
