Cannot change account type from current to savings

Asked by Sue

I am using KMyMoney 0.9.2 (KDE 3.5.10) on Ubuntu Jaunty. I have successfully imported a number of accounts from QIF files exported from MS Money. I did not notice that some of the savings accounts had been designated current - I assumed I would be able to go back and change that to savings at some later point. However, I find that under Edit Account the type is greyed out and cannot be altered. How can I change these accounts to be the correct type?

Thanks, Sue

Hello Ajinkya,

Thank you for the link. I tried out the suggestion on a copy of the
file, and it does indeed work, but I am a bit concerned about hacking
the data directly rather than having a legitimate option to amend the
type in the application itself. If it is a simple as changing a column
value then there should be no problem in making it a feature; if there
are other considerations related to the type then it is rather dangerous
to start tinkering! I'm just naturally cautious! So I just created a new
account with a name similar to the account I wanted to change, made sure
that the type was Savings at the time of creation, then selected all of
the transactions in the "wrong" account and moved them to the "right"
account, deleted the "wrong" account and renamed the "right" account as
required. Can you see any problem with this solution?

Best Wishes,

Sue

That seems like as good a way of doing it as any. Don't be so shy about the hacking type of answer though, it is a legitimate way of working with linux. I would guess that the way you have done it has left a better audit trail in KMyMoney.

It sounds as though it might be good tto send a bug-report off to the developers about this issue at some point tho, just to help people with the same problem in the future
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+filebug
or better still directly from the "Help" menu in KMyMoney as that would send a list of all the dependcy packages you have installed which might help the developers work it all out.

Please remember that this is a public forum so don't give us real bank-account numbers or anything personal like that!

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

The recommended way to do what you want to do is to create a new account and move your transactions to the new account.
Tinkering with the file is possible, but depending on the account type, there might be some unintended consequences (not from checking to savings, though)

Disabling edition of the account type is by design, not a bug. You might want to enter a feature request in our sourceforge tracker, but given that there is a quick workaround, it will have low priority. I don't want to give you any false hopes.

Lol, it's not really a chat-room. It just gets like that a bit sometimes :)) It was good to see a much better reply from Hei Ku, mine might work for some things but audit trails and unexpected other problems can happen all to easily in double-entry book-keeping which you really don't want to have affecting the TB or Vat-returns or anything.

I echo Ajinkya tho - Welcome to linux-land, especially the ubuntu corner of it :)

Hi :)

Have you been able to try the new Ubuntu 10.04 before it gets officially released?
http://www.ubuntulinux.org/testing/lucid/beta2
Trying it as a LiveCd or as an extra dual/multi-boot would be ideal. Developers and everyone are keen to try to iron out any problems before 10.04 gets officially released so you might find faster & more effective answers to your bug reports which would make 10.04 work better on your system for you

Thanks and regards from

Tom,
this has nothing to do with the latest Lucid beta, because the requested feature is not in the application.
So, try not to confuse people by talking about stuff you know nothing about.

@Sue,
this feature is being reviewed and it's going to be included in the upcoming release candidate, 3.98.

Hi :)

The Ubuntu 10.04 is an LTS release and so it will be used in many corporate & other settings for a great many years. It also happens to be the latest exciting new release that almost everyone will be moving to within the next month.

Anyone using Ubuntu is well advised to try out the new 10.04 as a LiveCd before it reaches official release so that they can have the greatest chance of having an impact on the final release
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/LiveCD

Hopefully it will be possible to install & use KMyMoney2 on all different unique sets of hardware out there in the real world using Ubuntu 10.04

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

Tom,
I appreciate your enthusiasm to support Ubuntu and the LTS version, but...

You are posting on a solved question, and the coming LTS will have no impact on the question asked.
At this point you are only babbling marketing stuff with no real value for users.

Please post somewhere else, where it can make a real difference in the real world.

Hei,

This is not the proper forum for this type of discussion. The value is pretty clear and is of benefit to all sides in this.

I do not understand why a developer would want to restrict the testing of their project on different platforms, especially on a platform that might be quite crucial to the project all too soon. Have you personally tested this project works in Lucid on all the various unique sets of real world hardware out there? So, are you 100% certain that it will work under every set of conditions?

My original post about this would have given Sue a chance to be at least 1 step ahead of the game in having experience with the new release.

If you choose to see this as purely a marketing issue then i think you really need to re-think your position. Yes, people enjoy going to see movies before everyone else but there are some good reasons for that. How much more so for an OS where it will have continuing impact on daily life? I appreciate that not everyone wants to be ready for the next new thing but many of us prefer an aperitif

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

Tom,
The value is not clear, because the new version of Ubuntu will not solve this question.
I can assure you that the new version of Lucid will not have the feature requested.
If you want people to test the new version, this is certainly not the proper venue.

Myself, I talk to the right people to make sure kmymoney2 is tested properly on the new platforms, but I do not mislead users by telling them a version will have a feature that it won't.

Let me assure that I take this very seriously, otherwise I wouldn't answer questions here even when I don't use Ubuntu myself.
Every once in a while, some candid poster comes by and blurbs some useless answer like "read the manual" or "try the latest version" without knowing a bit about the context. Frankly, I see that as a disservice to users.

You don't force a beta into regular users just for the sake of it. There are forums and other venues where early adopters get the info on the latest versions. This is not the correct one.

As a developer and release manager of the application, I can assure that your solution will not do a bit to solve this particular question. So, it is your word against mine.

Regards,
Alvaro
