importing Keepass between OS

Asked by eldergnome

I am trying to transition as painlessly as possible between Windows 7 and Ubuntu. I have my passwords stored using Keepass 1.2 on Windows 7. Keepass provides info on transitioning from Keepass 1.2 to 2.0 (transferring database from kdb to kdbx). This doesn't appear to work across OS however. Does anyone have ideas on moving these passwords?

If you are using the KeePass 1.x format then you can simply install KeePassX from the software centre. It is a native application that integrates very well just like you would expect.

Alternatively if you are using KeePass 2.x you can use the official KeePass with the help of the Mono libraries (as mentioned in the link above). Note that I've had some issues getting auto-type to work using this method so you may want to try it out for yourself before you commit one way or another.

Also if you are using KeePass 2.x and want to use KeePassX simply export your password database in 1.x format on Windows before using it on Ubuntu. Hope that helps!

Thanks for your response Tyler. I am responding from my Windows 7 machine tonight but will give your idea a go tomorrow. I am using the 1.x format. I already tried installing the 2.x format from the Software Center and was unable to import the data, even when following Keepass' instructions, because of the Ubuntu/Windows OS conflict. I will try to locate the KeePassX from the software center tomorrow. I do appreciate your input. I really don't want to have to manually input all the password info. Joe

I am again trying to install Ubuntu. I am having the same problem with keepass that I had previously. I am using a Keepass 1.2 database, tyring to import it into Keepass X. I exported the database to an external hard drive but I am having problems importing it to the Keepass X . It went flawlessly last time but I am failing this time. Help...

Let it go. I will transcribe the data manually.
