HI :)

Do you get sounds in multimedia movies and such? Do you have desktop sound effects alerting you to different things? Have you checked inside the games

to see if you have sound effects muted in there?

     Also makes a difference which games you are playing.... "Battle for Wesnoth" has music and sound, but I don't think any of the built-in games that come with Ubuntu do. Reason is probably more due to lack of "sound" crew than anything, but makes for quiet games to play when others in the house are sleeping as well.
