Blank Screen after installing KDE in Ubuntu 9.04

Asked by Robert Hagelberg

After a successful install on my Dell notebook of Unbuntu 9.04, I decided to install KDE desktop as an option. Upon rebooting I get nothing but a blank screen. Everything was fine before KDE. How do I remove the KDE installation without booting into Gnome?

I also noticed that the screen flickers a lot before going to blank.

Hi Robert,

at first you should try to manually restart the display-manger, i assume you use the gdm (It's a Ubuntu right?) via
sudo /etc/init.d/gdm restart
after Login via TTy (e.g. ctrl-alt-1). If that doesn't work try to look up the error in your x-server-log /var/log/Xorg.0.log .
Or you just go and remove kde via
aptitude remove --purge kde

After restart, your Displaymanager should show up again. (If KDE is really the problem...)

Thanks. I booted into recovery mode and manually restarted the display manager as above. It did start but I had no control over keyboard and touch pad. That was resolved by hard booting one more time.

I really appreciate your help and quick response.
